CHOOSING THE RIGHT STARFRUIT

Seeing a star fruit (or starfruit) in the grocery store can be a little intimidating or seem ‘too exotic’ if you’ve never sliced and eaten one your self, but don’t be scared, it’s delicious and easy. The best looking star fruit may not be the most ripe and delicious, so choosing the right one is important. Your best bet is to find the fruit with the least amount of green on the edges and the richest orange color. This could mean there are some brown edges, but if they are small, that indicates it’s at its optimum ripeness.

I have tried buying green star fruit and letting them ripen to a bright orange color, but they are always much more bitter than finding the fruit at the stand that has spent more time ripening on the tree. It really is hit or miss, so if you find a good source for them, stick with it. In Costa Rica there is a farmers market in the Pavas area of San José that has a lot of stands with star fruit, which they call carambola, but we have our favorite of course. You can find the market extending down about 500 meters along the street running beside the Palí in Pavas every Saturday morning.

Clean Eating Star Fruit

Okay. So the title of this post is rather redundant. Star fruit is a fruit. Of course it’s clean. But since I start every post with “Clean Eating”, I didn’t want this little post to feel left out. So there you have it.

I’m starting a new section on my blog. Every month, I will have an “Ingredient Of The Month”.  First, I’ll tell you about the ingredient, and then I’ll give you a recipe or a good way to use it. You ready for this? Go on… be brave!

So, if you’ll pardon the pun, the “star” for this month is Star Fruit.

About This Ingredient:

This fabulous fruit is known in Asia for curing many things that ail you. It’s even good for hang overs! How many fruits can claim that?

It’s very high in vitamin C, and is fabulously refreshing in the hot summer months that are coming at us like a full-force freight train (say that 5 times fast!)

Slice & Eat a Star Fruit

Known tropical carambola, also known as star fruit is yellow-green. Many people cut their food. Besides making it easier to eat the star-shaped slices are good. You can eat the whole fruit except the seeds. As with other fruits that contain vitamin C. Carambola are generally more expensive than other varieties of common fruits such as oranges and grapefruit.

Keep the red ball in cold water. Dust the fruit with your fingers.

Carambola perfectly flat on a cutting board. Cut the ends of the carambola. Check the sweet fruit, full of bruises and areas with the court.

Hold one end of the fruit with one hand. Overlap with the other hand, the fruit in thin slices across the width.

You can eat in your hand, or put the fruit in a fruit salad, yogurt, smoothies, pizza, dishes with fruit or nuts. For example, the spread of cream cheese and sugar in a cookie, a piece of star fruit on top, or use as a garnish for drinks.

An exotic fruit grown in tropical areas, the Starfruit is named after star-shaped single cutting. Thailand, Southeast Asia, South America, Hawaii and Florida, all these fruits and exports worldwide. Carambola is soft and a little "soft, but should be cut before consumption. The sweet, juicy, it's like a cross between an apple and grape. These fruits are rich in vitamin C and fiber and contains only 30 calories per fruit, cakes that a healthy and nutritious snack for everyone.

*Some of these health benefits are due to the nutrients highly concentrated in Star Fruit, and may not necessarily be related to Star Fruit.

Eating Star Fruit Raw

The Star fruit is a tropical fruit, also known as carambola, yellow skin or pale green. The flavor of this fruit is easy, "rough" a little. Choosing a Ripe Star Fruit.


Step 1: How to Choose a Ripe (or ripening) Star Fruit. When ripe, star fruit are mainly bright yellow with tinges of light green. They may have some dark brown along the five ridges - this is normal. The flesh should still be quite firm to the touch.

You can also buy star fruit when it's green and wait for it to ripen - just leave it on your counter (in its plastic wrapping) for a few days. When over-ripe, star fruit turns entirely yellow and starts to have brown spots all over.

Eat Star Fruit

Want to know how to eat star fruit? There are many ways to produce delicious fruit trees to enjoy as carambola kamranga or five fingers. In Western cooking is widely used as a cooking oil garnish, but is popular in many cultures, fruit juices, wine or eaten as is. It's like eating star fruit.

Choose a star fruit, or a tree farmer, "or supermarket. Polymerization at room temperature for several days after removal of the tree.

Recent studies are beginning to show that the star fruit has a number of medicinal properties, besides being rich in vitamins. After conducting several studies, researchers have found out that star fruit juice is capable of reducing blood pressure. When the juice was given to rats, their blood pressure dropped, followed by an increase, then a gradual drop.

It is thus possible that the star fruit, if consumed regularly, can help those suffering from high blood pressure. The fruits may also help to counter the effects of the many processed foods we eat which contribute to high blood pressure.
